Appleby is set in a great loop of the River Eden, protected by on the north side of the Norman Castle. It is situated at the foot of the Pennines with views across the lakeland mountains apprixmately 21 km south-east of Penrith, 30 km from Ullswater Lake, 51 km south of Carlisle and the Scottish border, approximately 180 north of Manchester and approximately 470 km from London. It is one of the most pictresque market towns in Northern England. Appleby enjoys a milder, drier climate than most of Cumbria and makes it an ideal base for exploring the countryside or simply relaxing. There are a variety of small shops offering local crafts and the regional specialities. You can visit Appleby Castle, which defended the town since the Norman times. St Lawrence's Church.
