County town of Biscaye, Bilbao is one of the most important towns of the Pays Basque. The town has undergone huge development over the past few years and is now one of the economic and cultural driving forces of the region. The town has a river running through it with the same name. It has a population of approx. 350,000 and has an underground system and airport (Sondika). Bilbao sets itself apart from other towns with it's numerous galleries and museums, of which there is a new one, museum Guggenheim, theatres, concert halls, cafe-terraces, bars and nightlife. 35km from San Sebastian, 25km from Castro Uriales and it's lovely beach. Must see: The Chateau de Butron, approx. 20km away.
